Thank you, Thank you, Thank you: Thank you to all who participated in our Supply Drive Friday, August 28th. We were able to provide substantial quantities of all the items needed by Hurricane Laura evacuees to support those who are living in hotels currently. In less than 24 hours we had more than $3,000 worth of supplies donated for our brothers and sisters. This too is pro-life work. We are assessing what the needs will be going forward and will reach out again as we know more.
If you can help with this effort please consider participating. There are around 750 Laura evacuees in the city of New Orleans who need some help. We give in gratitude for all that was given to us some 15 years ago. #louisianastrong #gorettistrong #blessedtogive

He is Risen, Alleluia
Dear family members,
Allow me use this platform to reach out to you all with this Easter message of Christ’s triumph over death.
We celebrate Easter this year in the midst of challenging and painful experiences. The first challenge was the loss of our Pastor in February. As we were coming to terms with the loss, Covid -19 hit and continues to ravage the world. Unfortunately we have not been spared. Some of our parishioners have contracted it and three have passed on. Two (James Becnel and Tammy Becnel) are from the same family. I am in touch with them and will be holding funeral prayers for them at the Cemetery on Friday. Steven Johnson’s funeral will be at a later date. Please remember the bereaved families in your prayers.
However, not everything is gloom. On March 21, 2020 we officially announced our new Pastor Fr. Daniel Green. He is a great Pastor whom I have known for some years. We look forward to receiving him with joy. Another cause for hope is the news that Covid-19 curve is beginning to flatten. We are urged to be even more cautious and not relax on the safety measures.
Easter is a time of joy, a time when we are reminded that God always has the final word. Death gives way to life, fear to faith and defeat to victory. The triumph of Christ over death is a clear reminder that Jesus has power over the forces of evil including Covid-19.
St. Paul tells us, “We know that in everything God works for good with those who love him, who are called according to his purpose” Rom 8:28. During this Corona period we have asked ourselves many important questions about life and perhaps have learned great lessons about what is of utmost value in this life. Corona has reminded us that humanity is one family. And that our true enemy is invisible and knows no color, creed, status, or power. It has brought out the goodness humanity. Many “Simons of Cyrene” have arisen to help to carry the crosses of others through acts of charity and words of comfort.
As we celebrate this Easter in our domestic churches (homes) possibly behind closed doors in fear and for fear of contracting the Virus, the words of the angel to Mary Magdalene and Mary, “Do not be afraid”, repeated by Christ himself shortly after, is the same message for us. Do not be afraid. Christ has conquered death and is alive. May he grant you his gift of Peace.
Jesus is truly risen, alleluia

The Access Code is: 601575. The Word of God can move us from fear to faith. This week, we continue our Lenten preparation and study of the Word of God with the GENERAL THEME: LORD, INCREASE MY FAITH? During week 5 we ask: LORD, GIVE ME A FAITH THAT IS ALIVE?
CONTINUING FAITH FORMATION AND RCIA SESSIONS WILL MEET BY CONFERENCE CALL ON WEDNESDAY NIGHT AT 7:00 PM. THE DIAL IN NUMBER IS: (425) 436-6314. THE ACCESS CODE IS: 601575. Topic: Baptism, why water? Why anointing? What does it mean to be enlightened with grace and truth? “ Catechism of the Catholic Church 1216 "This bath is called enlightenment, because those who receive this [catechetical] instruction are enlightened in their understanding . . . ." Having received in Baptism the Word, "the true light that enlightens every man," the person baptized has been "enlightened," he becomes a "son of light," indeed, he becomes "light" himself:
Baptism is God's most beautiful and magnificent gift. . . .We call it gift, grace, anointing, enlightenment, garment of immortality, bath of rebirth, seal, and most precious gift. It is called gift because it is conferred on those who bring nothing of their own; grace since it is given even to the guilty; Baptism because sin is buried in the water; anointing for it is priestly and royal as are those who are anointed; enlightenment because it radiates light; clothing since it veils our shame; bath because it washes; and seal as it is our guard and the sign of God's Lordship.
The Saint Maria Goretti Staff, Pastoral Council, and Parish Family are happy to open our arms and hearts as we welcome Father Daniel H. Green, as our Pastor effective July 1, 2020.

Happy, Holy Easter to All,
We at St. Maria Goretti have just completed a wonderful Lenten season. We can now celebrate the beauty and joy of Easter. Each day during Lent so many attended daily Mass, Way of the Cross and adoration of the Blessed Sacrament in the Chapel. Many joined in Bible Study on Monday nights to share the Word of God. On Palm Sunday we experienced the Hosanna’s of the people who recognized Jesus in exhilaration. On Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday of Holy Week we gathered as a family to join together in worship, praise and song to give God glory as we celebrate and grew in our knowledge of God and fellowship in our Parish Mission. On Holy Thursday we gathered to give thanks to God for the institution of the Eucharist and the Priesthood he entrusted to us at the Last Supper. On Good Friday we mourned and suffered with Jesus, hanging on the Cross in reparation for our sins and salvation for us. On Holy Saturday we entered the darkness of our Church with the Easter Candle, symbolic of Christ, the Light of the World. During these ceremonies we recalled the Creation of the world and mankind, and our fallen nature through sin. Then we sang with gusto, and rang all the Church bells, lighted the candles, decorated our altar and church with flowers as we sang the “Glory to God in the highest”. We are alive with Christ, fully alive through Baptism, inspired by the Holy Spirit, reconciled with God and each other, and uplifted by the Eucharist. What a wonderful, happy and holy Easter we have, as we celebrate the beauty of nature in our world and the special beauty of our lives with Christ.
A Happy, Holy Easter to our Goretti Family. Msgr. Gauthreaux, Fr. Cyril, and all our Staff

In the Gospel of Luke one of the apostles asked Jesus to theach them to pray and He did. Today, Jesus is willing and waiting to teach us to pray too. Join us as we begin the Lord Teach Me to Pray program Part I Virtues.

Deacon Poncho De Leon was a lot of things to a lot of people. Not only was he a Deacon, he was a chemist, a father, a grandfather and a friend. He worked for the University of New Orleans for 21 years at the Advanced Materials Research Institute (where he was Assistant Director), which is a multi-disciplinary institute where researchers, students, and visiting scientists collaborate on projects dealing with materials science and nanotechnology.
Ildefonso “Poncho” Ramos De Leon was born in the high desert town of Marathon, Texas, son Alec De Leon said. The middle child in a Spanish-speaking family with five kids, Poncho De Leon was an academic star in his town. He was class valedictorian at Marathon High School, earning a full scholarship to Sul Ross State University in Alpine, Texas, where he studied chemistry and math, according to his personnel records.
De Leon enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps during the Vietnam War. Following his service in the Marines, he returned to Marathon, where he landed a job in a food co-op and met Margaret Fennelly, whom he married in 1970. He pursued graduate studies in chemistry at Texas A&M before being hired in New Orleans, where he relocated with his young family that grew to include three children.
In 1983, De Leon was ordained as a permanent deacon and took great joy in serving parishioners at our parish during baptisms, weddings, funerals and more. On Facebook, where others post images of family or news stories or political memes, De Leon in the past year took to posting images of flowers—tulips, aster, black-eyed susans, purple roses, dianthus and more.
Deacon Poncho passed away unexpectedly on Friday, July 6, while spending time with his grandchildren. His son said the cause of his collapse and death at age 71 is not yet known. Deacon Poncho will be remembered for his combination of faith, professionalism, kindness and expertise.
Funeral Arrangements for Deacon Poncho will take place, here, at St. Maria Goretti on Friday, July 27, 2018. Visitation is 8:00am – 11:00am with the Holy Name Society leading the rosary at 9:30am, all organizations are invited to participate in the rosary. The Mass of Christian Burial will start at 11:00am.
He is proceeded in death by his wife, Margaret Fennelly. Besides Alec, who resides in New Orleans, he leaves behind a daughter, Marisa Reyes, and her husband Vigneer Reyes, of Metairie; and a son, Esteban De Leon, and his wife, Ann Beck, of Bellingham, Wash. Colleagues say De Leon spoke often of his family and was especially proud of his four grandchildren, Vigneer Jr., Cristian, Marilu and Marigny.
St. Maria Goretti Parish will forever be grateful for Deacon Poncho’s many years of service to our parish. Our prayers are with his family during this difficult time.
A huge THANK YOU" to our Goretti Family for your support of the CCD Bake Sale this past April. Because of your generosity, we were able to send $431 to the priests we support in Uganda.

On Sunday, November 12, 2017 the St. Maria Goretti High School of Religion sponsored their 10th Annual Living Rosary Prayer in the Msgr. Gauthreaux Center. Over 75 of our students assembled along with our teachers forming a Rosary and individually recited one of the prayers of the Rosary out loud. We used the Crucifix on the wall for the Crucifix on the Rosary and lit a candle in front of a statue of Our Lady.
Parents of the students also attended and they were invited to participate as well.
In support of spreading "Pray the Rosary" as we are encouraged to do by Our Lady of Fatima and to commemorate the occasion, the Holy Name Society presented each child with a small Rosary.

Thanks to all who attended our 2017 Parish Picnic, despite the fact that is was rescheduled from October 8th to October 22nd due to Hurricane Nate. We had a great turnout even though the forecast for the New Orleans area was stormy.
Greetings to you Ms. Laurelee,
Thank you so much for this picture and please my appreciation to you and these wonderful children of God for such a noble task which enables us to make small yet significant differences in the lives of some people down here in Uganda. God's blessing be upon you all.
Yours in Christ,
FR. MARK ODOI
Hi Ms Laurelee,
I pray and hope all is well with you and the bake for sale team. I am very grateful to you and your entire team for the generous and wonderful job well done. I am truly humbled for your love and generosity towards my work and those I serve. I received the money and I used it generously in helping some three kids pay their tuition. I helped Gloria, John Baptist and Peter. They send their appreciation. I was also able to do some house shopping for my new place in the parish where I am. Thank You Ms Laurelee and the Little Ones. God bless you all.
With Love and Gratitude,
Daniel Ochom, Fr.
